Walter invites a group of friends to a splendid house on the edge of a lake just before a disaster seems to destroy the rest of the world. Protected but imprisoned, guests discover that their host hides from them the nature of the house and their survival. A second cycle, by the sea, expands the mystery to other groups and to those who observe them.
