Lugdunum, today the city of Lyon, was founded in 43 BC. After the assassination of Caesar, the generals of his army rebelled against the Senate. The latter, to occupy Generals Plancus and Lépide who commanded in Gaul, asked them to found a colony on the hill overlooking the confluence of the Rhône and the Saône, it was also a question of sheltering the Roman citizens expelled from Vienna by the Allobroges and to put a garrison of legionaries to supervise the Gauls. The inhabitants of the Roman colonies were Roman citizens: merchants, soldiers, boatmen organized in corporations.
