The Skatalites is a Jamaican band formed in Kingston in 1964 around musicians such as Don Drummond, Tommy McCook, Roland Alphonso, Jackie Mittoo, Lloyd Brevett and Lloyd Knibb. Their music blends ska, jazz, mento and rhythm and blues, with a strong emphasis on brass and instrumental compositions that helped define the Jamaican sound of the 1960s. With tracks such as Guns of Navarone, Eastern Standard Time and Phoenix City, The Skatalites became one of the founding groups of ska and a major influence on rocksteady and reggae.
