After having provoked the abominable snow rabbits, Luffy and Sandy were chased by an avalanche while Nami was increasingly ill. By protecting Nami (and incidentally Luffy who was carrying her), Sandy was taken away by the avalanche and seriously wounded. Later, Luffy carrying his two friends fell nose to nose with Wapol, the despot of the Kingdom of Drum, but could not defend himself because the slightest shock could kill Nami.
