Overview

Presentation

Trails in the Sky 2nd Chapter is a Japanese role-playing game combining adventure, exploration and tactical combat. A direct sequel to Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter, it continues Estelle Bright's story in the Kingdom of Liberl. This new version revisits the historical second installment of the series, also known as Trails in the Sky SC, with fully modernized three-dimensional visuals.

The story begins after the events of the first chapter. Having become senior bracers after helping prevent a coup d'état, Estelle and Joshua see their future overturned when Joshua disappears after revealing part of his past. Determined to find him, Estelle sets out once again, while the secret society Ouroboros intensifies its schemes against the kingdom. The narrative therefore combines a personal quest with political intrigue and threats that gradually extend beyond Liberl's borders.

Players travel through different regions of the kingdom, visiting towns, exploring roads and dungeons, and meeting numerous characters. The adventure retains its emphasis on dialogue, relationships between protagonists and the everyday lives of local inhabitants. Missions assigned to the bracers accompany the main storyline and reveal the distinctive characteristics of the communities encountered, while further developing the world and its underlying conflicts.

This remake replaces the traditional isometric presentation with fully modeled 3D environments, featuring more expressive characters, renewed animations and cinematic storytelling. Exploration, conversations and battles benefit from a presentation adapted to modern systems without abandoning the narrative structure of the original game.

The combat system combines real-time action with turn-based tactical encounters. In Quick Battle, characters can attack enemies directly, dodge incoming strikes and use certain techniques associated with their fighting styles. Players can then switch to Command Battle, which allows them to select party actions more precisely, employ specialized abilities and manage positioning on the battlefield. This combination makes it possible to adjust the pace of combat to different situations.

Combatants have access to special techniques called Crafts, along with powerful attacks known as S-Crafts. The sequel notably introduces Brave Rush, a combined attack allowing the active character to coordinate with a companion during quick battles. Activating it consumes part of the Brave Gauge, adding a strategic dimension to the use of team abilities.

The tactical orbment system also plays a central role in character progression. Each character can equip crystals called Quartz, which enhance certain attributes and provide access to abilities known as Arts. Orbments in this second chapter feature seven slots, compared with six in the previous installment. Upgrading these slots allows players to equip more powerful Quartz and develop different combinations of offensive, defensive and support abilities.

Party composition relies on the individual characteristics of characters recruited throughout the story. Estelle reunites with several allies from the first chapter, including Scherazard, Olivier, Kloe, Agate, Tita and Zin. Each fighter possesses their own techniques and development options, encouraging players to vary their party composition depending on the enemies and situations encountered.

Outside combat, the adventure offers various optional activities, including fishing, poker and cooking. Recipes allow players to prepare dishes with different effects, while fishing involves using suitable rods and bait. A Viewer Mode also allows characters to be arranged in different environments to create personalized photographs.

By combining exploration, RPG progression and storytelling developed across multiple chapters, Trails in the Sky 2nd Chapter continues the events of the first game while expanding its combat systems and activities. The experience revolves around Estelle's search, the relationships between her companions and the conspiracies orchestrated by Ouroboros.

Good to know

Trails in the Sky 2nd Chapter was released on September 17, 2026, for PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC.

The game uses the Falcom Developer Kit game engine.

It is the direct sequel to Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter and a remake of the game previously known as The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky SC. It is also associated with the Japanese title Sora no Kiseki the 2nd.

The adventure is designed for single-player, with a narrative campaign that begins immediately after the conclusion of the first chapter.

Players can import completion data from Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter to obtain bonus items that assist with progression. This feature reinforces the continuity between the two installments.

The combat system offers two complementary approaches. Quick Battle allows players to fight directly in real time, while Command Battle provides access to turn-based tactical commands, particularly for special techniques, Arts and support actions.

Brave Rush is a new combined attack introduced in the second chapter. It consumes two points of the Brave Gauge and allows the controlled character to perform a coordinated attack with an ally during quick battles.

Tactical orbments can accommodate up to seven Quartz. These crystals enhance character abilities and unlock different Arts. Upgrading their slots provides access to more powerful Quartz.

Enemies associated with Ouroboros notably possess a special mechanic called Enforcer Boost, an enhanced version of Rage Boost that temporarily modifies their abilities during combat.

Cooking revolves around a recipe book and ingredients gathered or obtained throughout the adventure. Certain dishes can be used for their effects in battle, while unsuccessful preparations can occasionally produce offensive food items.

Fishing takes place at dedicated locations. The species caught depend on combinations of rods and bait, and discoveries are recorded in a fishing journal that can provide rewards.

Viewer Mode allows players to arrange characters in different environments, adjust their poses, costumes and certain composition elements, and take photographs.

The game features English and Japanese voice acting, along with text and subtitles in several languages, including French, English, Spanish and German.

The Nintendo Switch 2 Edition benefits from higher resolution, improved textures and an increased frame rate compared with the Nintendo Switch version. These improvements concern the technical presentation and do not change the adventure's content.

A free demo allows players to discover the beginning of the game. Several editions are also available, including a standard edition and a Digital Deluxe Edition containing the main game and an additional content pass, primarily focused on customization items.

On PC, the Steam version notably supports achievements and Steam Cloud saves. The game can be played offline in single-player mode.
