Synopsis

The Lord of the Rings: War in the North - Legacy Edition

While the Fellowship of the Ring begins its journey toward Mordor, another threat is growing in the north of Middle-earth. Agandaûr, a Black Númenórean serving Sauron, gathers an army in the ruins of Fornost to extend the Dark Lord's influence. The ranger Eradan, the Elf Andriel and the Dwarf Farin form their own fellowship and travel across the northern regions to confront Agandaûr's forces, support threatened peoples and prevent the opening of a new front capable of changing the course of the War of the Ring.

Overview

Presentation

The Lord of the Rings: War in the North - Legacy Edition is a remastered version of the Action RPG originally released in 2011. The adventure develops a conflict running parallel to the events of The Fellowship of the Ring and follows a new team tasked with defending northern Middle-earth.

The group is made up of three complementary characters. Eradan, a Dúnedain ranger, specializes in bows, precise attacks and stealth. Andriel, an Elven Loremaster, uses magic to attack, heal and support her companions. Farin, a Dwarven Champion, focuses more heavily on durability and powerful melee attacks.

The Legacy Edition now allows players to switch directly between the three heroes in solo play. This makes it possible to adapt the controlled character to the situation without waiting for a new mission, alternating between close combat, ranged attacks and magic.

Combat takes place from a third-person perspective and combines light and heavy attacks, special techniques, ranged weapons and abilities unique to each hero. The complementarity between the three characters remains particularly important when several types of enemies occupy the battlefield.

Progression follows an Action RPG structure. Each hero earns experience, unlocks new skills and can equip different weapons, armor pieces and equipment in order to develop their playstyle.

Loot therefore plays an important role. Enemies, chests and rewards provide new weapons and armor whose statistics directly affect character effectiveness.

The adventure crosses several regions in northern Middle-earth and includes encounters with familiar figures such as Aragorn, Gandalf and Elrond, while primarily following the conflict against Agandaûr, a servant of Sauron.

The group can also call upon Beleram, a Great Eagle able to intervene from the air against certain targets and support the fellowship during several battles.

The campaign can be played solo with the other two heroes controlled by the game, but it is also designed around cooperative play. Up to three players can form the fellowship online, while split-screen also allows local play.

Conclusion

The Lord of the Rings: War in the North - Legacy Edition brings back the 2011 Action RPG while retaining its adventure, three heroes and strongly cooperative structure.

Instant switching between Eradan, Andriel and Farin particularly improves solo play by allowing players to directly take advantage of their respective specialties.

RPG progression, loot and group combat remain at the heart of the experience, while its story continues to explore a parallel front of the War of the Ring rarely used in Middle-earth video game adaptations.

Good to know

The Lord of the Rings: War in the North - Legacy Edition is developed and published by Aspyr Media.

It is a remastered version of The Lord of the Rings: War in the North, originally developed by Snowblind Studios and released in 2011.

The Legacy Edition launched on August 11, 2026 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC, including Steam, Epic Games Store and GOG.

The Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 versions were also released in 2026, with the European launch set for August 18, 2026.

The new edition retains the three protagonists from the original game: Eradan the Dúnedain Ranger, Andriel the Elven Loremaster and Farin the Dwarven Champion.

One of its main additions allows players to freely switch between the three heroes during solo play, whereas the original game placed greater restrictions on the character selected for a sequence.

Co-op allows play with up to two additional players, forming a fellowship of three heroes. Split-screen play is also available.

The story runs parallel to the events of The Fellowship of the Ring and follows the struggle against Agandaûr, a Black Númenórean who has gathered his forces in the ruins of Fornost.

The game notably allows players to visit or encounter locations and characters associated with Rivendell, Lothlórien, Mirkwood and the Lonely Mountain, as well as Aragorn, Gandalf and Elrond.

This entry focuses on the 2026 Legacy Edition, its three heroes, RPG progression, character switching and cooperative play, without covering the original 2011 release as a separate work in detail.
