Overview

Presentation

Onimusha 2: Samurai's Destiny is the remastered version of the action-adventure game originally released for PlayStation 2 in 2002. Capcom retains the structure, story and core mechanics of the original while improving its presentation and several quality-of-life features.

The adventure takes place around ten years after Onimusha: Warlords. Jubei Yagyu returns to find his village destroyed by the forces of Nobunaga Oda, now commanding the Genma, and begins a quest for revenge.

Jubei quickly discovers his connection to the Oni and gains the ability to absorb souls released by his enemies. These resources contribute to his progression and can notably be used to strengthen his equipment.

Combat mainly revolves around swordplay, guarding, dodging and different weapons with their own powers. The player can also perform an Issen, a critical counterattack that requires striking at the exact moment an enemy attacks.

The remaster makes this arsenal easier to use with simplified weapon switching, removing the need to constantly return to menus during combat.

The controls have also been modernized. More direct analog movement is now available, while the classic tank-style controls remain an option for players who want to reproduce the original handling.

By absorbing certain special souls, Jubei can temporarily transform into an Onimusha. Unlike in the 2002 game, this transformation can now be activated manually, allowing the player to save the power for a difficult encounter.

One of the defining features of this entry remains its affinity system. Jubei meets four main characters — Oyu, Magoichi Saiga, Ekei Ankokuji and Kotaro Fuma — and can give them different gifts.

Gifts affect relationships with these companions. Their affinity level notably determines who will come to Jubei's aid during certain sequences and can alter several events as well as the course of certain narrative branches.

The game therefore combines combat, exploration and light RPG elements, while also including sections where certain allies become more important depending on the relationships built throughout the adventure.

Key points

  • The remaster of the 2002 PlayStation 2 game.
  • Jubei Yagyu as the protagonist.
  • A story set around ten years after Onimusha: Warlords.
  • Nobunaga Oda now commands the Genma.
  • Jubei possesses Oni powers that allow him to absorb souls.
  • Sword-based combat built around attacks, guarding and timing.
  • Issen allows powerful critical counterattacks.
  • Souls contribute to progression and equipment upgrades.
  • The Onimusha transformation can now be activated manually.
  • Faster weapon switching improves combat flow.
  • Modernized analog controls complement the classic control scheme.
  • Oyu, Magoichi, Ekei and Kotaro can become allies.
  • Gifts influence the affinity system.
  • Relationships with companions can alter certain scenes and narrative branches.

Conclusion

Onimusha 2: Samurai's Destiny deliberately preserves the structure of the 2002 game rather than attempting to transform it into a modern remake.

Sword combat, Issen, soul absorption and the affinity system therefore remain at the heart of the experience, while modernized controls and quality-of-life improvements make them more direct to use.

The relationship system particularly distinguishes this entry: gift choices and the affinities developed with Oyu, Magoichi, Ekei and Kotaro can alter the help Jubei receives and several events during his journey against Nobunaga.

A new Gallery Mode includes more than 100 illustrations by character designer Keita Amemiya.

The new Infernal difficulty results in an immediate game over whenever Jubei takes a single hit.

Players with save data from Onimusha: Warlords can also obtain a special outfit for Jubei, which is purely cosmetic.
