Overview

Presentation

LEGO 2K Drive is an open-world racing and adventure game that brings LEGO construction into a universe built entirely around vehicles. Players explore Bricklandia, take part in races, complete different challenges and gradually build their reputation until they are ready to compete for the prestigious Sky Trophy.

Driving revolves around one central feature: vehicles can automatically change configuration depending on the terrain. A road car transforms when it leaves the asphalt to become an off-road vehicle, then takes the form of a boat when it reaches water. These instant transitions make it possible to move through environments without interrupting the action and encourage players to treat the entire world as one large driving playground.

The handling favors an accessible and energetic approach. Drifting, boosts, jumps and power-ups shape the races, while vehicles can take damage and lose some of their bricks during collisions. Tracks are therefore built around arcade driving where shortcuts, impacts and use of the environment matter just as much as following the ideal racing line.

The Story mode provides the main progression. The player begins as a rookie driver and gradually takes on a series of rivals to build reputation. Victories unlock new competitions and bring the player closer to the showdown with Shadow Z, before the final objective represented by the Sky Trophy.

Bricklandia is divided into several regions with distinct identities. Turbo Acres, Big Butte County and Prospecto Valley offer different roads, natural areas, bodies of water, terrain and activities. Players can move freely between many events, making it possible to step away from the main progression at any time to explore or tackle optional challenges.

The open world contains much more than standard races. Quests, driving challenges, mini-games and activities are spread across the different regions. Some focus on speed or jumps, while others make more direct use of the vehicle systems or the interactive LEGO environment.

Several modes complement the campaign. Single races allow players to compete directly against other drivers, while Cup Series group several events together in a championship-style structure. Mini-games introduce objectives different from traditional racing and lean more heavily into the arcade nature of the experience.

The Garage forms the other major pillar of LEGO 2K Drive. It allows players to create cars and boats from LEGO bricks, modify vehicles they already own or follow guided builds. Shapes, colors, wheels, driver position, decorations, horn sounds and many other details can be customized.

Building is not limited to appearance, however. Creations must respect certain constraints related to their category and weight. Several weight classes influence the overall characteristics of a vehicle: a heavier build may gain durability while losing agility, whereas a lighter vehicle behaves differently. The system therefore balances creative freedom with practical driving performance.

Vehicles earned during progression or built in the Garage can be organized around the three main configurations required for exploration: road, off-road and water. The game automatically selects the appropriate form when the terrain changes, turning these three vehicles into one coherent set during travel.

LEGO 2K Drive can also be played with others. Story mode supports local split-screen co-op, while different activities can be played with other players online. Competitive modes allow direct races against other players, and certain platforms also support cross-play.

  • Shadow Z serves as one of the main rivals in the progression.
  • Several open regions with their own environments and activities.
  • Races, quests, challenges and mini-games spread throughout the world.
  • Cup Series made up of several consecutive races.
  • A Garage that allows players to build and modify their own vehicles brick by brick.
  • Extensive customization options including shapes, colors, wheels, decorations and other details.

  • Playable in single-player, local co-op and online multiplayer.
  • Cross-play between several supported platforms.

Conclusion

LEGO 2K Drive combines the freedom of an open world with arcade driving designed to let players move constantly from one type of terrain to another. Automatic vehicle transformation prevents road, off-road driving and boating from feeling like separate activities: all of Bricklandia becomes directly accessible from behind the wheel.

The Garage also translates LEGO building into the progression system. Vehicles are not simply rewards to collect: they can be assembled, modified and customized to create personal designs while still retaining characteristics that matter during races.

Story mode, open-world challenges and the different multiplayer modes finally provide several ways to use these creations. Progress toward the Sky Trophy gives the game its main direction, but free exploration and building remain just as central to its identity.

Good to know

LEGO 2K Drive was developed by Visual Concepts and published by 2K, in partnership with The LEGO Group.

The game was released on May 19, 2023 for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch and PC, through Steam and the Epic Games Store.

It is the first game produced through a partnership between 2K and The LEGO Group focused on the development of multiple LEGO video games.

Story mode can be played in single-player or local split-screen co-op. Online features also include cooperative and competitive multiplayer.

Cross-play is available between PlayStation, Xbox and PC. The Nintendo Switch version does not participate in cross-play with the other platforms.

After launch, the game received several seasons of Drive Pass, adding new vehicles, rewards and other content. These seasons do not have a time limit and remain separate from the fundamental content of the base game.

Different editions also add vehicles, cosmetic items and other additional content. This entry focuses primarily on LEGO 2K Drive in its base form and the systems that define its core experience.
