Overview

Presentation

Granblue Fantasy: Relink is an action role-playing game developed by Cygames and Cygames Osaka, and published by Cygames, XSEED Games and PLAION depending on the region. Based on the Granblue Fantasy universe, it takes players on a three-dimensional adventure where exploration, dynamic combat and character progression revolve around a crew of skyfarers traveling through the skies. Its visual style, inspired by Japanese animation, accompanies a fantasy world blending magic, ancient civilizations and mysterious technology.

The story follows a captain and their companions, including Lyria, a young girl connected to powerful creatures, and Vyrn, a small talking dragon. Their journey toward Estalucia, the legendary island of the Astrals, leads them to the Zegagrande Skydom, where new encounters and troubling events disrupt their voyage. The adventure develops relationships between crew members while exploring the history of a world shaped by the legacy of the Astrals and the presence of immensely powerful primal beasts.

The campaign unfolds through a series of story chapters and explorable regions. Players discover towns, natural landscapes, ruins and territories inhabited by different communities. Exploration involves gathering resources, opening chests and completing objectives connected to the story. Towns also serve as preparation hubs where the crew can upgrade equipment and accept new missions. This structure emphasizes a guided adventure rather than a continuous open world.

Real-time combat forms the core of the gameplay. Players command a party of four characters, directly controlling one while the others are handled by artificial intelligence in single-player mode. Each fighter has a distinctive style, with their own weapons, combos and abilities. Some specialize in close-range attacks, while others rely on magic, ranged weapons or support techniques. Dodging, blocking and recognizing enemy attack patterns become particularly important during boss encounters, which may feature several phases.

Cooperation between characters adds another dimension to combat. Link Attacks allow party members to coordinate their actions when an enemy is stunned, while Skybound Arts can be chained together to unleash powerful group attacks known as Chain Bursts. Alongside these mechanics, RPG progression allows players to develop each character's abilities through mastery trees, upgrade weapons and equip sigils that provide various bonuses. These systems encourage players to adapt party compositions to different opponents and preferred strategies.

Beyond the main campaign, Granblue Fantasy: Relink offers numerous standalone quests available from quest counters in towns. These include boss encounters, consecutive battles and special objectives, with increasing difficulty levels and rewards used to strengthen characters. These activities can be completed alone, with AI-controlled companions, or in online co-op with up to four players. They extend the adventure beyond its main storyline by placing greater emphasis on party composition and equipment development.

Key points

  • A fantasy action RPG featuring a narrative adventure in a world of floating islands.
  • A crew of playable characters with distinct combat styles and abilities.
  • Dynamic real-time battles emphasizing dodging, combos and coordination.
  • Cooperative attacks, including Link Attacks, Skybound Arts and Chain Bursts.
  • RPG progression based on masteries, weapons and sigils.
  • A single-player campaign complemented by standalone quests and increasingly challenging encounters.
  • Online co-op for up to four players, focused on missions and combat encounters.

Conclusion

Granblue Fantasy: Relink combines a fantasy adventure centered on a traveling crew with a combat system in which every character has their own fighting style. Exploring the Zegagrande Skydom, meeting its inhabitants and confronting primal beasts provide the framework for a campaign that expands the Granblue Fantasy universe.

The complementary abilities of the fighters play a central role in both battles and character progression. Additional quests and online cooperation build on these mechanics by allowing players to assemble different parties and adapt their equipment to more demanding challenges. The game therefore brings together narrative adventure, action and character development within a single experience.

Good to know

Granblue Fantasy: Relink was released on February 1, 2024, for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5 and PC. It uses the Cyllista Engine.

The game belongs to the Granblue Fantasy franchise, which originated as a role-playing game for web browsers and mobile devices. It features a separate story set in the same universe. Players can choose between Gran and Djeeta as the crew's captain, while several iconic companions from the franchise join the party.

The world is inhabited by four main peoples: Humans, Erunes, Harvins and Draphs. The primal beasts, created by the Astrals, play an important role in the mythology and events of this universe.

Town quest counters provide access to more than 100 quests, some of which offer challenges designed for advanced characters. Fate Episodes also explore the personal backgrounds of crew members and provide additional rewards.

The main campaign can be played solo and offline. Additional missions support online cooperation for two to four players. In the original edition, cross-play is limited to PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, while the PC version uses separate multiplayer sessions.

Several free updates in 2024 introduced additional characters, quests and features. An expanded edition, Granblue Fantasy: Relink – Endless Ragnarok, subsequently extended the game in 2026 with new content, also available to owners of the original title through a paid upgrade.

The game features Japanese and English voice acting, along with text and subtitles in French, English, Spanish and several other languages. A free demo also allows players to experience part of the adventure.
