Synopsis

Cairn

Aava, an experienced mountaineer, sets out to climb Mount Kami, a mountain whose summit has never been reached. She faces its walls alone with the ambition of completing the first ascent and must choose her own route through an environment as impressive as it is dangerous. Throughout the expedition, she discovers traces of previous attempts, meets several people connected to the mountain and gradually learns more about its history. As the physical effort and isolation intensify, her journey increasingly raises the question of what she is willing to sacrifice to reach the summit she has been pursuing.

Overview

Presentation

Cairn is a climbing and survival adventure centered on Mount Kami and Aava, an experienced mountaineer attempting to become the first person to reach its summit. Rather than turning climbing into a sequence of predetermined holds, the game gives players considerable freedom to read the rock face, choose a route and decide where to place the protagonist's hands and feet.

Climbing therefore becomes the game's true movement system. Facing a wall, the player selects Aava's limbs one after another and looks for points of support that will allow her to progress. The rest of her body adapts to these decisions: posture, reach, balance and distribution of effort become just as important as the presence of an accessible hold.

Aava is an accomplished climber and automatically makes use of the holds indicated to her, but the player remains responsible for the chosen route. A seemingly direct path may place her body in a position that is difficult to maintain, while a detour may provide better support or conserve more energy. The same wall can therefore be approached in several different ways.

Aava's exertion is directly visible in her behavior. Her breathing changes, her limbs may begin to shake and demanding positions become increasingly difficult to maintain. The player must then adjust her posture, search for another hold or find a way to secure the climb before fatigue leads to a fall.

Pitons play an essential role in managing that risk. Placed into the rock, they secure the ascent and limit the consequences of a fall. Their supply is not unlimited in the relevant game modes, however, so deciding where to use them becomes part of route preparation, just like studying the wall from below.

Mount Kami is not built as a succession of closed climbing courses. Players can explore the mountain and define their own route, examining cliffs before committing to them and looking for passages suited to their remaining resources or abilities. This freedom also turns navigation itself into part of the ascent: reaching a specific point does not necessarily mean following a single intended route.

The expedition unfolds over several days and adds a survival dimension to the climbing. Food, water, medicine, chalk, tape and climbing equipment must all be managed within the limits of what Aava can carry. Some resources can be found directly on the mountain, but every detour and every piece of equipment spent must be weighed against continued progress toward the summit.

Bivouacs allow Aava to stop during the ascent. They provide opportunities to recover, care for her condition and prepare for the next section of the route. Players therefore also have to decide when to keep climbing and when to interrupt their progress, especially when conditions or Aava's state make continuing more dangerous.

The mountain also has its own history. Other climbers attempted Kami before Aava, and exploration reveals traces of some of these expeditions. Encounters and elements scattered along the route gradually provide more context about the place and the people connected to it, without separating narrative completely from exploration.

This physical progression is directly tied to Aava's personal journey. Her objective is clearly defined from the beginning — completing an ascent no one has achieved before — but the journey is not only about gaining altitude. The people she meets, those who remain below and the sacrifices demanded by the expedition give that ambition a more intimate dimension.

Several difficulty levels allow the simulation to be adjusted. The available modes change the level of challenge, while different assistance options can reduce survival constraints, make certain resources unlimited or lessen the consequences of falls. Climbing therefore remains at the center of the experience while allowing its harshness to be adapted.

Key points

  • An adventure entirely structured around the ascent of Mount Kami.
  • A climbing simulation where the player directly chooses holds and the placement of Aava's hands and feet.
  • Considerable freedom to read the walls and create a personal route.
  • Management of posture, balance and exertion rather than a simple abstract stamina system.
  • Pitons used to secure progress and limit the consequences of a fall.
  • A multi-day expedition with food, water, medicine, chalk and equipment to manage.
  • Bivouacs used to recover and prepare for the next stage of the climb.
  • A mountain that can be explored beyond the most direct route to the summit.
  • Traces of earlier expeditions and encounters that gradually reveal the history of Mount Kami.
  • A narrative centered on Aava, her ambition and the sacrifices tied to her goal.
  • Several difficulty levels and assistance options that adjust survival and climbing demands.
  • An experience designed primarily for single-player.

Conclusion

Cairn makes climbing itself the heart of its adventure. Progress does not rely on automatic routes or a single button used to attach to predetermined holds: the player must read the rock, build each movement, monitor Aava's posture and constantly decide whether the current position can actually support further progress.

Survival extends this logic across the entire expedition. Choosing a route, using a piton, consuming a resource or setting up a bivouac are all decisions that shape the way the ascent unfolds. The mountain therefore becomes at once the space being explored, the main obstacle and the foundation of the game's progression.

Aava's journey finally connects this physical simulation to a story about her ambition and the cost of her objective. Climbing Mount Kami is therefore not simply a succession of walls to overcome: it is the thread that ties the entire journey together.

Good to know

Cairn was developed and published by the French studio The Game Bakers, also known for Furi and Haven.

The game was released on January 29, 2026 for PC and PlayStation 5.

Its creators describe it as a survival-climber, combining climbing simulation, exploration, resource management and narrative.

The artistic and narrative direction notably involves comic-book author Mathieu Bablet, while the audio team includes artists and creators who have worked on productions such as Limbo, Inside, Control and Cocoon.

The game offers three main difficulty levels: Explorer, Alpinist and Free Solo. The first two can be combined with assistance options that can notably rewind before a fall, make certain climbing resources unlimited or disable survival constraints.

Cairn is a single-player experience. Its main campaign follows Aava and her ascent of Mount Kami.

This entry covers the main game released in January 2026. Content and modes added after release remain distinct from this base experience.
