Synopsis

Borderlands 4

For millennia, Kairos remained hidden from the rest of the universe under the rule of the Timekeeper. This leader maintains control over the population through an army of synthetic soldiers and cybernetic implants called Bolts, used to monitor and control its inhabitants.

That balance begins to collapse when a catastrophe breaks the planet’s isolation. Several years later, four new Vault Hunters — Vex, Rafa, Amon and Harlowe — crash on Kairos. Captured soon after their arrival and forcibly fitted with a Bolt, they are immediately confronted with the system that keeps the planet under control.

Their search for Vaults quickly becomes intertwined with the rebellion already underway against the Timekeeper. Kairos is home to different factions, communities and resistance groups seeking to escape his authority, while the Order attempts to preserve its control over the planet’s various regions.

The Vault Hunters must travel across Kairos, recruit allies and gradually weaken the Timekeeper’s power without losing sight of the Vaults and the riches that brought them there in the first place.

Overview

Presentation

Borderlands 4 retains the fundamental structure of the series: an FPS centered on loot, characters with very different abilities, a huge variety of weapons and progression designed for both solo play and co-op. Its most visible evolution, however, concerns the way Gearbox builds and lets players move through its world.

Kairos is organized around four large regions connected in a continuous way: the greener landscapes of the Fadefields, the frozen terrain of Terminus Range, the devastated lands of Carcadia Burn and Dominion, the Timekeeper’s fortified city. This structure gives exploration greater continuity and allows players to move more naturally between main missions, events, side activities and discoveries made along the way.

Mobility directly supports this openness. Vault Hunters can now combine double jumps, dodges, air gliding and a grappling hook to move and fight with much greater freedom. These abilities are useful both for reaching certain areas and for changing the flow of combat, particularly when they allow the player to quickly alter elevation, evade an attack or reposition.

For longer distances, the Digirunner can be summoned across much of Kairos. This vehicle speeds up exploration of larger spaces and can be customized, while the ECHO-4 drone accompanies the player and can help guide them toward their next objective. Several points of interest can also be taken back from the Order in order to expand fast-travel options and make regional exploration easier.

Combat and the constant search for better equipment nevertheless remain at the heart of the game. Weapons come from eight manufacturers with distinct behaviors, but the new Licensed Parts system allows certain models to incorporate characteristics from other manufacturers. A single weapon can therefore combine several design philosophies that were usually separated in previous entries, further increasing the number of variations capable of influencing a build.

Equipment is not limited to primary weapons. Grenades and heavy weapons now share an Ordnance slot that works with a cooldown, while Rep Kits can restore health or temporarily provide specific bonuses. These changes create more opportunities to build a coherent loadout around a particular playstyle rather than treating every item independently.

This design is especially visible in the Vault Hunters themselves. Vex the Siren, Rafa the Exo-Soldier, Amon the Forgeknight and Harlowe the Gravitar are the four playable characters available in the base game. Each has three Action Skills linked to branching skill trees, allowing several different directions to develop from the same character.

Vex can make use of her Siren powers and summon different manifestations to fight alongside her. Rafa uses an experimental suit capable of digistructing his own arsenal, while Amon and Harlowe offer other approaches based on their specific abilities. Variety therefore comes not only from the initial character choice, but also from the specializations developed over time through levels and equipment.

This build depth remains closely tied to the traditional Borderlands loop. Finding a legendary weapon or a particularly effective piece of equipment can encourage the player to adjust part of their skill setup, while a new skill-tree choice can make previously ignored weapons more interesting. Loot therefore keeps its central function: constantly feeding experimentation and the search for more effective combinations.

The open world gives this loop more room to develop. Kairos contains events, bosses, activities and side missions that can be discovered while exploring. Some positions controlled by the Order can be reclaimed for the resistance, directly connecting optional activities to the wider conflict against the Timekeeper.

Co-op also remains an important part of the experience. Up to four players can explore Kairos together online with cross-play, individualized loot, dynamic level scaling and the option for each member of the group to keep their own difficulty setting. PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S versions also support two-player local split-screen co-op.

Borderlands 4 therefore expands the series without abandoning its central principle. The accumulation of weapons and character building remain at the heart of the experience, but the more continuous world and new movement abilities give greater importance to what happens between battles. Kairos is not simply a succession of areas filled with loot; exploration itself becomes a more prominent part of the formula.

What to remember

  • A new mainline entry set on Kairos, a planet held under the authoritarian control of the Timekeeper and his Order army.
  • Four new Vault Hunters in the base game: Vex, Rafa, Amon and Harlowe, each with three Action Skills and several specialization paths.
  • A more continuous world made up of four large regions with side missions, events, bosses and positions that can be reclaimed from the ruling power.
  • Expanded traversal through double jumps, dodging, gliding, the grappling hook and the summonable Digirunner.
  • A loot system that remains central, expanded by Licensed Parts that allow certain weapons to combine characteristics from several manufacturers.
  • Progression strongly focused on build crafting through skill trees, equipment and synergies between abilities and weapons.
  • Online co-op for up to four players with cross-play, along with two-player split-screen on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.

Conclusion

Borderlands 4 mainly seeks to evolve the series around what already worked: satisfying gunplay, the pursuit of loot and the gradual construction of a character. The four Vault Hunters and their skill trees offer many specialization options, while the Licensed Parts system further expands the range of weapons capable of shaping a build.

The biggest difference comes from Kairos and the mobility given to the player. Large connected regions, the Digirunner and the new movement abilities make exploration more prominent than in previous entries and allow combat to make greater use of verticality and movement. This openness remains closely connected to missions, events and the resistance against the Timekeeper, preserving a clear sense of direction.

The game nevertheless remains deeply tied to the repetition inherent to the looter-shooter genre. Much of its longevity comes from repeated combat, the search for better statistics and build optimization. The appeal of that loop therefore depends heavily on how much the player enjoys experimentation, co-op and equipment collection.

By strengthening traversal and world continuity without abandoning the density of its loot system, Borderlands 4 offers a coherent evolution of the formula. Kairos provides the series with a new setting, while the four Vault Hunters and the range of customization options keep what still defines Borderlands at the forefront: finding an unexpected weapon, figuring out how it fits into a build and immediately setting out to find the next one.
